You posted my first letter to you, along with a link
to one of my pages. Thank you! I recently revisited
your site to write a review for Stonewall Society. It
will appear in their Equal Pride newsletter, early in
the summer. It will then move to the website review
section of the Stonewall Society site, later in the
summer.

My review follows.
This multi-award winning site focuses on the twentieth
centurys first case of legal gay marriages. However,
it also includes many other related historical facts.
The site reads like a coffee table book, with large
illustrations prefacing short but highly informative
articles. It is a delight to read, especially for gays
who want a stronger sense of hope and history. I also
love the layout, which crams an incredible amount of
links into a tiny amount of space without disrupting
the site. The emphasis stays on these photographs of
our history, our contributions. 1st Partnership is one
of the best designed, best organized, and most helpful
gay sites youll encounter!

Congratulations on
the tenth anniversary of the Danish Registered
Partnership Act!
You may be interested to know that I have mentioned your site in the Web
Watch column in the current issue of the Gay and Lesbian Humanist magazine.
The article is available online at
http://www.galha.freeserve.co.uk/glh191w1.htm.
Partnership
It is just ten years since the first
modern legal recognition of same-sex partnerships was established by the Danish Registered Partnership Act,
which came into force on 1st October 1989 (see Denmark Leads
the Way, G&LH Winter 1989-90). The first of 11
couples (all male) whose partnerships were registered in Copenhagen that day were Axel and
Eigil Axgil, whose relationship was already in its fortieth year, both of them atheists
and longstanding campaigners for gay rights. In June 1948 Axel founded Forbundet af 48
(now renamed LBL), one of the worlds oldest
surviving gay organisations.
The story of the pioneering activities of the Axgils and others that eventually
led to this historic event is told on the First
Partnership Page. Although the main language of this site is English, the
site is truly multilingual, with versions of the home page also in Danish, French, German and Swedish, and many of the
background documents presented in their original languages. The text is supplemented by
good-quality photographs throughout.
In addition to the Danish story, there are links to further information relating
to most of the other countries that have subsequently implemented registered partnership
laws (Norway 1993, Sweden 1995, Greenland 1996, Iceland 1996, the Netherlands 1998, and
the Canadian province of Quebec 1999), those that have enacted related but more restricted
rights (Hungary 1996 and the US state of Hawaii 1997), and those where proposals have
reached a parliamentary level (Belgium, Brazil, Finland, France, Portugal, Spain and the
United States). Can it be coincidence that at least two of the pioneering countries -
Norway and the Netherlands - are ones where the humanist outlook is relatively
influential?
The First Partnership site carries a number of other interesting features not
directly related to partnership. One of them, Gay
Holocaust, details the hunt for Carl Vaernet, the Danish doctor who carried out
atrocities on gay men at the Nazi concentration camps at Buchenwald and Neuengamme.
Another, Origin
of Homo, is an anonymous essay proposing an amusing evolutionary theory in which
it seems that gay men are responsible for the invention of monotheism and just about every
other aspect of human cultural development! |

Gay Marriages: The True Definition of Courage
http://pegasus.rutgers.edu/~jennyrw/gaymarriage.html
Although, if you want to see history on
your computer screen, go visit The 1st
Partnership Page! There you can read about the first legally married gay couple,
Axel and Eigil Axgil. They were married on October 1, 1989 in Copenhagen, Denmark,
after almost forty years on being together! I won't put all of the facts down about
them since they all can easily be viewed at the touch of a button, but I will say
that despite all of their struggles, arrests, persecution, and hart times, they stayed
faithfully together, bound by their love which was evident to all by their common name.
Their story is truly inspirational, and I insist that you go see their site.
The road to gay and lesbian
acceptance has come a long way, but it is quite obvious that there is still a long way to
go. Same-sex marriages are not yet legal in the United States. The first legal
marriage was that of the gay couple, Axel & Eigil Axgil (http://users.cybercity.dk/~dko12530/ ),
who married together in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 1, 1989. The Axgils had been
together for nearly 40 years, 32 of which under a common name. They traveled down a
very hard road of hardships, including imprisonment, because of their sexuality.
They were gay rights activists and eventually ended up victorious when they won the right
to get married. Their marriage was a worldwide media event because there were 10 other
gay-male couple legally married at the same time. Denmark was the first country in the
world to legally allow gay/lesbian marriage.

"Gay People given the right to Adopt
Almost 10 years after Denmark allowed people of the
same sex to register their partnership, the registered
partners have this week come one step closer to full legal
equality with married couples. The Danish government
has passed a new law that enables the registered
partners to adopt stepchildren and hereby give the
children the same legal rights as all other children in
Denmark. Only one issue remains before the registered
partners have obtained full legal equality in Denmark
namely the question of adoption of a child not related to
any of the partners."

Axel & Eigil Axgil fik for alvor rykket ved

Århundradets homopar: Axel (1916-) och Eigil (1922-95)
Axgil
dog 1995.

I interviewed Eigil Axgil in Copenhagen that day. He
and his husband,
Axel Axgil, were the first gay couple in the world to be legally
almost-married and acquire nearly ever right and obligation of marriage.
"We just never could have dreamed we would get
this far," Eigil told me
through a translator. "Of course, we always hoped we would be fully
accepted and have the same rights as others."
Asked if he had any advice for gays elsewhere in the
world, Eigil said: "Be
open. Come out. Keep fighting. This is the only way to move anything. If
everyone comes out of the closet then this will happen everywhere".

Værnets grav i Argentina.

We really appreciate you sending this "theory" along. Scientifically,

ROMANTIC NOTIONS
Axel Axgil
and Eigil Axgil
On October 1, 1989, Denmark became the
first nation to allow gays to marry, under a registered-partnership law that grants all
rights of matrimony except access to adoption, artificial insemination and church
weddings. Because their four decades of courageous gay activism had culminated in the
passage of this historic law, 74-year-old Axel Axgil and his 67-year-old partner of 40
years, Eigil Axgil, were honored by being the first in line to marry that day.
Axel founded the Danish gay-rights movement
by coming out of the closet in 1948. He was fired from his job the very next day. Later
that year, he and Eigil, whom he met while both were in prison for gay-rights activism,
founded Denmark's National Homosexual Association. In defiance of their persecutors they
changed their last names into an amalgamation of their first names and took to wearing
identical suits. What followed was a 46-year relationship built on love and a devotion to
gay rights activism. At his wedding ceremony, Eigil Axgil, who died in September 1995, had
words of advice for gays and lesbians around the world: "Be open. Come out. Keep
fighting. This is the only way to move anything. If everyone comes out of the closet then
this will happen everywhere." When it does, we will have the two of you to thank for
starting it all. Thank you Eigil. Thank you, Axel. You are heroes of, and for, love.

One for the record books. This site chronicles lots of firsts, but mainly documents the
first gay couple in
Denmark to get full legal recognition. Includes other historical information about the
fight for legal gay

I think your site will be an
outstanding addition
