"What We Want"
The first manifesto of the Norwegian Gay and Lesbian Movement
November 1951
Oslo, Leif Pareli
The eight-page brochure "Hva Vi Vil (What We Want) was the first manifesto of the Norwegian gay and
lesbian movement, during the time when this group comprised the Norwegian section of the Danish
Forbundet af 1948. The brochure, produced by Rolf Løvaas, Øivind Eckhoff, also bore the emblem of the
entwined hands and was send in November 1951 to all the doctors and newspaper editors in the country. It
informed them of the three year old Association of Scandinavian Homosexuals and included significantly
this plea for understanding and tolerance: "as nature has made us this way and we definitely are a third sex
(the third sex), we seek the right to live our lives as they innately are for us, as long as we do others no
direct harm".
